Mid-year Mods: Small Shifts to Maximize the Next 6 Mos

We have another month to savor before autumn enters stage right. A great time to check-in and refresh our 12-month goals. Are we where we wanted to be? What needs to shift to get there?

I’m an optimist, so midyear tends to be a recalibration time for me and my sky-high goals. Here are a few tactics harnessing to stay the course and make the most of the half-year ahead.

Energy Tracking

Maybe it’s midlife, post-pandemic adjustments, or the demands of building a business I love, but energy fluctuations have been a real struggle for me. To better understand it, I’m monitoring and noting my energy levels in a notebook a few times a day to see how nutrition, exercise, work activities and rest quality may be impacting my inner “fuel.” This will help me make better short-term decisions (maybe a power walk instead of a 6-mi run) and avoid mid-week exhaustion.

Hydration

Speaking of tired, a drained state could be dehydration. When I caught myself prepping a second pot of coffee recently, this mod moved to the top of the list. While I’m not surrendering my AM brew, I AM sweetening the switch with cut lemons, oranges, strawberries and basil. My goal: 64 oz of water a day + I'm documenting how it helps my energy. Stay tuned.

Timing to Offset the Perfectionist

My perfectionist can be a real bully. She plays on self-doubt, urges me to focus on the immaterial and wastes so much time. I’m leaning on my iPhone for an assist. For projects I tend to excessively tweak (ahem, writing!), I’m creating specific time interval deadlines and setting a timer. So far, 3 benefits: Greater focus, more productivity AND insight into how I’m actually spending my days (and why these to-do lists only seem to grow). Next phase: Embracing the imperfect.

Dedicated Creative Play

As a business owner, creativity is a muscle I flex on the regular. So I haven’t felt as drawn to invest in creative activities outside of work. However, a recent Sunday afternoon spent with a 10-year-old reignited this. We fiddled and made funky jewelry for hours. It was fun and I actually found myself revitalized and inspired—an energy that carried me well into Monday. Fringe benefit of fun.

Got any mid-year mods you're considering or taking on? Go on and share back. We'd love to hear them. Here's to a stellar next 6 months!
